MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Over 7,700 Syrians have returned to the northern Syrian town of Jarabulus from Turkey’s Gaziantep province, two months after its liberation, the head of the Gaziantep regional migration office said Tuesday.
"To date, a total of 7,741 people have returned to Jarabulus," Oktay Bahceci was quoted as saying by the Anadolu news agency.
Syrians have to go through registration procedures and security checks at Turkey’s Karkamis border crossing before going to Jarabulus, he noted.
On August 24, Ankara announced that Turkish forces, backed by US-led coalition aircraft, had begun a military operation dubbed Euphrates Shield to clear Jarabulus of the Islamic State jihadist group, outlawed in Russia and a number of other coutries. Syrian Kurds and Damascus have accused Ankara of violating the territorial integrity of the country.
