MOSCOW (Sputnik) — During the annual meeting of the international Valdai Discussion Club, Bogdanov said:
"We can't but express concern about the continuing unstable political and military situation in Libya… At least in the foreseeable future the situation is unlikely to change."
He noted that terrorist organizations retain their presence against the background of a power vacuum in some areas of Libya.
The armed conflict in Libya began in February 2011, after protests erupted in Libyan provinces with demands for the resignation of Muammar Gaddafi, who had ruled the country for over 40 years. After Gaddafi was overthrown, leadership was contested by two rival governments — the internationally-recognized Council of Deputies based in Tobruk and the Tripoli-based General National Congress.
The United Nations helped to bring about a ceasefire in late 2015 and on March 31, the UN-backed unity government took office in Tripoli. However it has been unable to end the political impasse.
