Moscow will consider extending the Turkish Stream pipeline into the European Union only after receiving official guarantees.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Russia is ready to extend the Turkish Stream gas pipeline into Europe after receiving guarantees from the European Union of the project implementation, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Tuesday.

"Russia and Turkey have signed an intergovernmental agreement on the Turkish Stream, which implies among other things the construction of one leg, so far only one leg, going to Europe, in particular to Greece," Lavrov said at an Association of European Businesses briefing in Moscow.

He added that following the failure of the South Stream Russia would be ready to extend this leg into the European Union only after receiving official guarantees of the project implementation.

Russia and Turkey signed an intergovernmental agreement on October 10, which envisions construction of two underwater legs in the Black Sea. The annual capacity of each leg is estimated at 15.75 billion cubic meters of natural gas. One of the legs will deliver gas directly to the Turkish market, while the other one will be used for gas transit through Turkish territory to European countries.
