WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton and her Republican rival Donald Trump have already spent more than $1.13 billion combined, which is $100 million more than presidential candidates did in the 2012 race.
"[C]andidates, parties and outside groups could spend nearly $6.6 billion by the time it’s all over, $86.5 million more than the last presidential cycle when adjusted for inflation," the CBP stated on Tuesday. "The cost could be much higher — this is a conservative estimate."
The study revealed that US Senator Bernie Sanders, who competed with Clinton for the Democratic Party's presidential nomination, broke a record in receiving donations from small donors. More than half of contributions Sanders received, or $134 million, came from supporters giving $200 or less.
The US elections are set for November 8, but early voting has started in many states across the country.
