The administrative center of the province is the city of Jalalabad, where in January a number of explosions took place near the foreign consulates.
Government forces in Afghanistan are fighting the Taliban insurgency. The state of turmoil in the country has persisted since the 2001 US-led invasion to defeat the Taliban and al-Qaeda terror groups in the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on New York and Washington, DC. Extremist group Daesh, outlawed in many countries including Russia, has also increased their presence in the country and in neighboring states.
