PARIS (Sputnik) — On Tuesday night, multiple fires started in Calais, after migrants sent their tents on fire, which is believed to be traditional for them when leaving.
According to the Francetvinfo news portal, the morning was calm at the camp, but the number of departure fires broke out shortly before noon, releasing thick black smoke. The firefighters arrived on the scene, but were unable to immediately take control over the fire.
According to the media outlet, the fire was extinguished by afternoon, no deaths or injuries were immediately registered.
On Monday, French authorities started to dismantle Calais camp, beginning with the relocation of migrants to other facilities across the country with some minors due to be sent to the United Kingdom. So far, about 5,000 of estimated 9,000 Calais camp residents have been safely moved to other locations.
Since 2015, Calais has been the home to a large migrant camp, notorious for its horrible living conditions. Thousands of migrants from the Middle East and North Africa are arrived to the Jungle, located not far from the Channel Tunnel, in hopes of reaching the United Kingdom.
