Former US Army National Guard member Mohamed Bailor Jalloh pleaded guilty to attempting to provide material support to the Daesh, the US Department of Justice said in a press release on Thursday.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Jalloh, a 27-year old naturalized US citizen, was arrested on July 3 after attempting to purchase a rifle at a local gun store.

"Jalloh attempted to provide material support to ISIL [Daesh] by transferring funds intended for use by ISIL, taking steps to join and assist others in joining ISIL and attempting to obtain a weapon that he believed would be used in an attack on US soil in the name of ISIL," Acting Assistant Attorney General for National Security Mary McCord stated.

According to the Justice Department, a now-deceased Daesh member solicited Jalloh’s help in procuring money and weapons that he said would be used in an attack.

Jalloh will be sentenced in February and faces up to 20 years in prison.
