The Charter defines the purposes of the United Nations and regulates the activities of its members in order to keep them in line with the principles of equality, peaceful settlement of the conflicts and refraining from threats or use of force against other country's territorial integrity and political independence.
"We are in desperate need of a freely and universally and fully respected system of international law, which all states, big and small, must respect… It emphasizes the need to return to the spirit and letter as reflected in the UN Charter," Mbeki said speaking at the Valdai Discussion Club session in Russia's resort city of Sochi.
At the same time, according to the official, the UN Security Council (UNSC) have to be changed in order to reflect the multipolarity that exist in the world at the moment.
"The Security Council does not reflect multipolarity today. It must be changed. It needs transformation," Mbeki said, speaking at the Valdai Discussion Club session in Russia's resort city of Sochi.
He added that the world should "exercise" its multipolarity in order to cope with the challenges of the modern world.
"We have a multipolar world. We need to exercise this multipolarity in order to solve challenges," Mbeki stressed.
The politicians from a number of countries, such as India and Germany, have repeatedly called for reform of the current structure of the UNSC, which has been established in 1945. The current composition of the Security Council, includes five permanent members, namely China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States, which have the veto power and 10 non-permanent members.
