US presidential candidate Hillary Clinton’s campaign pushed for changes to a New York Times blog about her shifting position on gay marriage before the article appeared in the newspaper’s print edition, according to an email released by Wikileaks on Friday.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — At issue was a Times blog that described Clinton’s shifting position on the issue, which was then being considered by the US Supreme Court.

"Can we point those who are writing to the 2013 video in which she [Clinton] supports marriage equality from both a policy and legal standpoint to push back on the point this is not a flip flop?" Clinton campaign spokesperson Karen Finney wrote in an April 15, 2015 email string.

Clinton said she hoped the court would rule that the US Constitution supported gay marriage, which the high court eventually did, even though Clinton had said a year earlier that the issue should be decided on a state-by-state basis.

Finney’s email described a conversation between Clinton aide Ian Sams with the Times reporter, Alan Rappaport, after the blog was posted.

Rappaport explained that he was not sure whether the article would appear in the print edition or be folded into a longer article.

Previous emails released by Wikileaks have revealed that Clinton shifted her position on other issues, such as international free trade deals, and that she believed a politician needs both a public and a private stance on issues.
