REYKJAVIK (Sputnik) — The newly posted results show the Pirate Party, with 13.4 percent of the votes, yield the second place to the Left-Green Movement and its 17.1 percent, while the Independence Party is still in the lead, now with 30 percent, the RUV television broadcaster reported.
Earlier results had the Pirate Party in the second place with 18 percent of the votes, the Independence Party leading the way with 27.1 percent of the votes, and the Left-Green Movement in the third place with 16.4 percent of the votes.
The final results of the elections that finished at 10:00 p.m. local time (10:00 GMT) on Saturday are not available yet, as the counting continues.
A few days before the elections, the polls indicated the strong winning chances of the Pirate Party, polling either first or second. The party won two seats in the 2013 elections, but gained many new followers following the political crisis that erupted in the country after the release of the Panama Papers revealing corruption in Prime Minister Sigmundur David Gunnlaugsson’s government.
