The EU anti-fraud office seeks to obtain 339,000 euros ($371,566) from France's National Front leader Marine Le Pen after an investigation into alleged misuse of European Parliament funds, media reported on Monday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — According to the French investigative website Mediapart, OLAF accused Le Pen of breaking the European Parliament rules by claiming the salaries of two parliamentary assistants, Thierry Legier and Catherine Griset, who were actually carrying out work for the National Front but not for the European Parliament.

In September, Le Pen was asked to provide within a month proof that her assistants were respecting the terms of their employment, however, she failed to do so.

French National Front Leader Le Pen Calls EU Immigration Policy 'Irresponsible'
Le Pen’s lawyer Marcel Ceccaldi told French news magazine Marianne that she planned to appeal to the European Court of Justice and would hold a press conference at the European Parliament to talk about the issue.

Ceccaldi added that the investigation was aimed at "restricting Marine Le Pen’s political activity at the Parliament and censoring a critical voice within that assembly."

According to the latest polls, Le Pen, the National Front’s presidential candidate, has good chances to become the next French president.

The French presidential elections are scheduled for spring 2017.
