MOSCOW (Sputnik) The Moscow office of Amnesty International rights group has been sealed off by municipal authorities without any preliminary warnings or notifications, the rights group confirmed Wednesday.

"The employees of the international organization found out that the office is sealed off at around 10:00 in the morning [07:00 GMT]. The organization did not previously receive any notifications and the office was sealed in their absence," the group said in a statement.

According to the statement, the locks have been changed, the alarm has been turned off and some cables can be seen through the keyhole.

A note belonging to the City Property Department of Moscow and saying "the object is the property of the subject of the Russian Federation" has been put on the front door, the rights group said.

Head of the Amnesty International office in Moscow Sergey Nikitin said that the employees were currently trying to find out the reasons of this situation.

"We have been renting the office directly through the City Property Department of Moscow for over 20 years. We have always been responsibly paying the rent, and we have already paid for this month… We are trying to contact [the Moscow Property Department] for two hours, though, we have not notched up any success yet," Nikitin told RIA Novosti.

Russian president's spokesman Dmitry Peskov earlier in the day said that Kremlin was unaware of the fact that the Moscow office of Amnesty International had been sealed off by municipal authorities. Peskov assumed that the stuff of the office should have had some information about this situation.
