BEIJING (Sputnik) – China is going to provide North Korea with $3 million in humanitarian assistance as the country suffered from heavy floods, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce said on Wednesday.
"Since the beginning of September, a heavy flood has hit northeastern Democratic People's Republic of Korea, resulting in a big number of victims and severe material damage. On North Korea’s request, the Chinese government decided to allocate 20 million yuans [$3million] as humanitarian aid for remediation of the disaster’s consequences," the ministry said in a statement.
The heavy rain caused tens of thousands of homes and public buildings to collapse leaving at least 138 people dead and about 400 missing. Around 70,000 people lost their homes while in November the temperature will fall up to 15 degrees Celsius below zero (5 degrees Fahrenheit), according to weather forecasts.
