Iraqi Militia to Sputnik: 'Our Goal is to Cut Link Between Daesh in Iraq, Syria'
MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The armed forces of the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), an Iraqi state-sponsored militia organization, are ready to fight Islamic State (Daesh) terrorists not only in Iraq, but also in Syria, PMF commander of the Turkmen unit told Sputnik on Wednesday.

"The PMF forces are fighting against terrorists for the sake of their country and people. We are ready to confront Daesh (Arabic acronym for ISIL) also in Syria, if there is such a proposal from official sources. We are ready to fight against the jihadists everywhere, no matter where they are," Ahmet Arslan said.

He added that the militia currently sought to break the connection between the Islamic State militants in Iraq and Syria.

"Our forces are currently moving from the area of Geyyara toward Tal-Afar [Mosul province]. We have already managed to make significant progress. The main goal of the operation is to prevent the Daesh militants from retreating from Tal-Afar to Syria," Arslan said.

The strengths of PMF is believed to be around 120,000 armed men, including Shiites, Alawites, Sunnis, Kurds, Turkmens and Arabs. PMF militia has been fighting against Daesh terrorists in Iraq for 2.5 years.

Mosul has been occupied by Daesh, a jihadist group outlawed in many countries, since 2014. The operation to retake the city from the terrorists began on October 17.
