Godzilla is generally depicted as an enormous, violent monster which occasionally awakens from its undersea hideout to wreak havoc on Tokyo. Let’s just hope that this new one, located in the small town of Chikuzen in Fukuoka prefecture, isn't quite so ferocious.

The small agricultural town with a population of just 30,000 built their own Godzilla as the highlight of their autumn harvest festival.

A team of 20 people spent four months designing the Godzilla figure, then on October 2 about 150 volunteers joined them to actually build the beast.

Chikuzen's Godzilla is made of straw and bamboo, and towers  seven meters high and 10 meters long including its huge tail, Japanese daily Mainichi Simbun reports on Thursday.

LED lights are embedded in the straw, meaning that Godzilla emits a menacing glow all night long. Combined with the light from a nearby transmission tower, the monster look frighteningly life-like.

While this is not the first Godzilla statue to be erected in Japan, it probably wins the prize for the most fragile one. The statue was completed on time for the harvest festival, which kicks off on November 5. However, not everything has been plain sailing. Locals say they are worried because of heavy rains and the risk of fire, and they are also reported to have run afoul of copyright infringement.
