New Delhi (Sputnik) — Inaugurating the Asian Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction in New Delhi, Prime Minister Modi said that India will work with partner countries and stakeholders to build a coalition for promoting disaster resilient infrastructure in the region. He said the country will work towards risk coverage for all.
“Presently in most of the countries of the world, the benefits of insurance are limited to the middle class and upper-middle class income groups. We have to think about states playing an important role in regulating and encouraging coverage for those who need it the most. In India we have taken bold steps to ensure financial inclusion and risk insurance for the poorest,” Prime Minister Modi said while addressing the conference.
Prime Minister Modi stressed that women should be encouraged to have more involvement as they are they suffer the greatest burden in any disaster.
“Women are the most affected by disasters. They also have unique strengths and insights to cope with these disasters. We must train a large number of women volunteers to support the special needs of women affected by disasters,” Modi said.
Modi urged the world community to invest in risk mapping globally and build on local capacity and initiatives. Prime Minister Modi also outlined the increasing role modern technology and social media play in enhancing the efficiency of disaster risk management efforts.
