The lower house of Russian parliament passed a law making it a criminal offense to entice athletes toward the use of doping on Thursday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The initiative drafted by the ruling United Russia and Liberal Democratic party lawmakers was adopted with amendments in the second and third readings.

The new law fines an offending trainer, sports medicine or physical culture specialist either 300,000 rubles ($4,720 at the current exchange rate) or a six-month equivalent of monthly wages with or without the right to occupy positions for up to three years.

The law also envisions imprisonment for up to one year with or without the right to occupy positions for up to three years.
