WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The US government is seeking to incentivize the use of electric cars by building charging stations along a vast network of interstate highways, the administration of President Barack Obama announced in a press release on Thursday.
"For the first time, the United States Department of Transportation (DOT) is establishing 48 national electric vehicle charging corridors on our highways," the release stated. "These newly designated electric vehicle routes cover nearly 25,000 miles, in 35 states.
The White House statement noted that in the past eight years, the number of plug-in electric vehicle models has increased from one to more than 20, battery costs have decreased 70 percent and the number of existing charging stations has grown from less than 500 to more than 16,000 today.
