A court in Turkey ordered on Friday to arrest eight lawmakers from the pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) over alleged links to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), outlawed by Ankara, local media reported.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Earlier on Friday, 12 Turkish members of parliament from HDP were detained in Turkey. Initially, reports stated that the court ordered the arrest of five of them.

According to the Hurriyet newspaper, three of those 12 were released on bail, while the fate of one lawmaker was yet unclear.

In May, the Turkish parliament voted to strip lawmakers of parliamentary immunity. Pro-Kurdish members of parliament said the law specifically targeted them because of their political views and would lead to deprivation of immunity and prosecution on alleged links to PKK outlawed in Turkey.

Tensions between Ankara and Turkish Kurds escalated in July 2015 when a ceasefire between Turkey and the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) collapsed over a series of terrorist attacks, allegedly committed by PKK members.
