A few days after hitting the market, the XXL-size beach baskets were booked for months, local media report.
The 1.40 meter wide beach basket is designed for two people. During the day it is used as a classic beach basket, but at the night it can be closed and turn into a real bed.
A nearby hotel supplies the guests with sheets and towels. There is also a torch in the basket and a key to the sanitary building. One night in the sleeping basket costs between 29 and 79 euro.
"The beach-sleeping basket directly connects human beings with the environment and provides them with unforgettable experience," says Arne Schultchen, cited by German newspaper Hamburger Abendblatt.
Schultchen, who is managing director of feldmann + schultchen design studio and initiator of the project, also added: "It is the perfect example of our understanding of innovation in tourism and evidence that a well-designed project and new thinking contribute to — mental and real — growth."
Recently, the beach-sleeping baskets were chosen as the most innovative tourism project of 2016. The award jury took into account such factors as potential profitability of the project, impact on the environment and innovation.
