The former Soviet Semipalatinsk nuclear test site is located in northeastern Kazakhstan. Over 450 nuclear tests were conducted at the Semipalatinsk test site from 1949 to 1989. Shortly after Kazakhstan proclaimed its independence, Nazarbayev signed an executive order to shut down the site.

Japan is the only country that has been attacked with the use of nuclear weapons. In 1945, the United States dropped two atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, on August 6 and 9 respectively. The bombing in Hiroshima killed about 150,000 people, and the raid on Nagasaki claimed the lives of some 70,000 people.
