The French National Front (FN) party is politically close to US President-elect Donald Trump in terms of using populist arguments and not hesitating to lie to reach their goals, Helene Conway-Mouret, a member of the French Senate representing the Socialist Party, told Sputnik on Wednesday.

MOSCOW, November 9 (Sputnik) — Trump triumphed over his Democratic challenger, Hillary Clinton, in the November 8 presidential election. He gained 276 electoral votes, which is more than 270 needed to win.

"The National Front party is close politically to Donald Trump in terms of using populist and nationalist arguments as well as showing readiness to use lies to reach their goals and to access power," Conway-Mouret said.

Her comments came in response to a question about what she made of the fact that National Front leader Marine Le Pen was among the first to congratulate Trump on his victory in the elections on her Twitter account.

Conway-Mouret added that the campaign that Le Pen was leading was similar to the one that Trump had launched and that the party that she represented was also a nationalist party that shared Trump's views on many issues.

The next French presidential elections will be held in April and May, 2017. A poll, conducted by Ifop on October 26, confirms that Le Pen is expected to advance to the second round of presidential elections, securing from 26 percent to 30 percent in the first round. The only candidate who can do better in the first round is former Prime Minister Alain Juppe who could secure around 35 percent of the vote.
