The new feature became available in the second developer beta 2 version of iOS 10.2 for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch, recently released by Apple.
In order to activate the SOS function, a user must rapidly click the power button five times – the gadget will then dial a local emergency number and send a message containing the user’s current location data to a predetermined contact list, according to 9to5Mac.
Other features of the new software include new iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus wallpapers, new emoji and widgets and a host of other small but useful gimmicks.
It remains unclear however when the final version of the software will be released.
