Democrats fell short of the 30-seat pickup that that needed to take control back for the first time in six years. Republicans are projected to keep a majority of 235 seats, versus the 200 projected for Democrats.
The projection indicates that the Democratic Party will gain 12 seats, increasing their minority from 188 in the lower chamber of the US Congress.
Paul Ryan has stated that he will run for Speaker of the House again, however many Republicans, particularly within the Freedom Caucus are upset over his lack of campaigning for Donald Trump.
The next session convenes in January.
