WASHINGTON (Sputnik) – The Cairo group of the Syrian opposition respects election of Donald Trump as the new leader of the United States and hopes it will revive the US-Russian cooperation on the Syrian settlement, the group's leader Jihad Makdissi told Sputnik.
"It's democracy…. We respect the choice of the American people, and his speech was promising, especially when he talked about dealing fairly with foreign countries. So we are hoping that the US-Russian cooperation will resume so they can push political process in Syria 'fairly,'" Makdissi said.
Earlier on Wednesday, Trump became the president-elect despite most of the analysts and opinion polls predicting his defeat. In his victory speech, Trump said his administration would "deal fairly with everyone – all people and all other nations."
Russia-US cooperation on Syria has been at its lowest since late September after a joint ceasefire deal broke down amid repeated violations and accusations from both sides.
