WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The US Republican Party nominee emerged as a winner earlier on Wednesday as he gained 279 Electoral College's votes, which is more than the required 270 minimum. His Democratic Party rival Hillary Clinton secured only 218 votes.
"Either president would inherit a country that has some deep and passionate political differences, and what will President-elect Trump do to unite the country? It won’t be easy… we do know that he can count on the support of President Obama," Earnest told reporters on Wednesday.
The Obama Administration will remain committed to the Iran nuclear deal and the Paris Climate Agreement during the rest of President Barack Obama's time in office, Earnest said.
"This administration will be committed to implementing those policies through January 20th and we will live up to the commitments we made in each of those areas," Earnest stated.
It is too early to analyze the message voters in the United States were trying to send when they cast ballots on Tuesday, Earnest said.
"It is far too early… to discern exactly what message the voters were trying to send last night," Earnest stated.
Obama is hopeful that Trump will not use his position to take political revenge against Hillary Clinton despite Trump’s pledge to prosecute her, the White House spokesman said.
"We’ve got a long tradition in this country of people in power not using the criminal justice system to exact political revenge," Earnest told reporters. "We go to great lengths to insulate our criminal justice system from partisan politics…and the president is hopeful that it will continue."
