MOSCOW (Sputnik) – German Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen said Wednesday Donald Trump’s electoral progress came as a "heavy shock," in what is the first official remark from Berlin on US voting results.
"I think Donald Trump knows this was not a vote for him but rather against Washington, against the establishment," the minister said in a comment aired by regional broadcaster ARD.
Donald Trump is projected to win the White House after securing votes in a bunch of US swing states. During the election campaign, he controversially warned other NATO member states the United States could pull out if they did not contribute their fair share.
German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said Tuesday he would refrain from commenting on German and EU future relationship with the United States until its new foreign policy is made public.
