The Memorial Park North Recreation Center, the Dalton Elementary School, as well as a local daycare center and a preschool were put on lockdown amid gunfire reports.
"We believe the suspect was armed with an assault rifle with a rapid-fire capability; whether it's fully automatic or semiautomatic, we don't know at this time," Hunt said at a news conference in Azusa, which is near Los Angeles.
“We have possibly a second suspect,” he added. “Right now for sure we know we have one female suspect armed with an assault rifle…. We've had some conflicting reports where there's a second suspect, a male suspect dressed in tactical gear; however, we've only had one report of that.”
According to the Azusa police chief, one person was confirmed dead in the shooting and two people were taken to a hospital. The status of a third injured victim wasn’t known, he added.
After the shooting, the suspect entered a house and was still holed up there, with heavily armed police units at the scene.
