Greece’s top court ordered a security agency on Thursday to resume the inquiry into a leftist urban guerrilla group, 17 November (17N), more than a decade after it was disbanded, local media said.

ATHENS (Sputnik) The probe was prompted by a letter, published in the Ethnos newspaper, in which N17’s jailed leader Alexandros Giotopoulos claimed eight of the group’s members were still at large.

The prosecutor of the Greek Supreme Court ordered the anti-terror agency to look into the publication in the Ethnos and other outlets, the Editors’ Newspaper wrote.

Giotopoulos is serving a life sentence in a Greek prison after he was found guilty of leading the group, outlawed in Greece and the United States for killing dozens of US, British and Turkish diplomats and military officials, as well as Greek politicians and business people.

The anti-establishment Marxist group was believed to be defunct since the capture of many self-proclaimed revolutionaries and police raids on 17N hideouts in 2002.

The reopening of the investigation came as a hand grenade attack injured a policeman early Thursday guarding the French Embassy in Athens, just days before outgoing US President Barack Obama is due to come to Greece.
