ANKARA (Sputnik) — Fatih Safiturk, district governor of the Mardin town of Derik, is among the five injured, according to the NTV broadcaster.
Safiturk reportedly was inside the administration building when it was being shelled. Safiturk was appointed the district governor after his predecessor was suspended from work following the July coup attempt.
Similar attacks are frequent in the southeastern province of Mardin, as the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), outlawed in Turkey, is active in the region. Tensions between Ankara and Kurds escalated in July 2015 when a ceasefire between Turkey and the PKK collapsed over a series of terrorist attacks, allegedly committed by PKK members.
