ROME (Sputnik) — US President-elect Donald Trump will behave differently as the future US president compared to what he said during the election campaign, Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi said Thursday.

"I think that as president, Donald Trump will not be the same to what he was as a candidate. This can be seen from his first speech. He will have his own ideas, but I tend to think that his presidency will have elements which differ from the election campaign," Renzi told his Facebook subscribers during a live feed.

Unified European Left Hopes Trump to Help End Bloodshed Around the Globe
The prime minister congratulated Trump, wished him to do a "good job," expressing hope that the friendship between the two countries would remain in place. Renzi, who had publicly supported Clinton, also dismissed claims that his stance will impact US-Italian relations as these are strong and stable, while most of the EU establishment was rooting for Clinton as well.

Trump won an unexpected victory during the 2016 election with 290 electoral votes, while his rival Hillary Clinton received 232 votes despite winning the popular vote by a margin of over 200,000. The inauguration is due on January 20.
