New Delhi and Tokyo have inked a nuclear cooperation deal.

NEW DELHI (Sputnik) — India and Japan signed a civil nuclear cooperation deal on Friday that will open the way for Japanese atomic tech exports and increase India’s energy security, its External Affairs Ministry said.

"This would provide for the development of nuclear power projects in India and thus strengthening of energy security of the country," the ministerial statement read.

The agreement on cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy was inked during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's three-day visit to Japan, the second one in two years.

India is the first nation that is not a signatory of the 1968 treaty on the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons (NPT) to sign a nuclear cooperation agreement with Japan.
