Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto has expressed optimism about building a new agenda of bilateral relations with the United States after Donald Trump starts serving as US president.

MEXICO CITY (Sputnik) – Nieto said on Thursday, as quoted by the 24 Horas TV channel, that he has "well-founded optimism" that the new bilateral agenda "is positive and that, in addition, it is for the benefit of the societies of both nations."

On Wednesday, Nieto told reporters that he had talked with Trump over the phone and that the two agreed to meet in the transition period.

On Twitter, the Mexican leader congratulated the United States on the conclusion of the Tuesday presidential elections, saying that Mexico and the United States are "friends, partners and allies."

In announcing his presidential bid on June 16, Trump said illegal immigrants from Mexico bring mostly drugs and crime to the United States, and characterized Mexican immigrants as rapists. He has repeatedly vowed to build a wall between Mexico and the United States, saying the former would pay for the construction.

Mexican Foreign Minister Claudia Ruiz Massieu insisted on Wednesday that his country would not pay for the construction of a wall on the US-Mexico border.

Trump gained well above the 270 electoral votes needed for a victory in the Tuesday elections, surpassing his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton.
