MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Fallon will speak in Brussels on Monday of the necessity to scrap the plans for the EU army and double the support for NATO instead as Trump's election provides an "impetus" to the United Kingdom’s bid to encourage other EU members to allocate more funds for defense, The Telegraph newspaper reported Friday.
The UK is reportedly worried that under US President-Elect Donald Trump, the United States might opt out of helping the NATO allies in case of crisis, as Trump had said during his campaign that other members of the bloc would have to "pay their bills" first.
NATO recommends reserving 2 percent of the country's GDP for the military expenditure, but, as of July, only four NATO members in Europe, Estonia, Greece, Poland and the United Kingdom, met this target.
