LONDON (Sputnik) — Over the course of his election campaign, the newly elected Republican president had repeatedly backed a review of Washington’s relations with its NATO allies and expressed support for the idea that they should pay a fair price for the United States providing their security. After the election NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg expressed hope that Washington would be committed to its NATO obligations under Trump.
"NATO is a collective security organisation and in that role it's very important that we honour that commitment… I have every confidence that commitment will be honoured should that be necessary… This is no time to question the partnership between Europe and the United States," Stuart Peach told the Sky News broadcaster.
He added that the United States and the United Kingdom had "very wide and very deep" relationship in the military sphere and the military links would continue to be stable in future.
Trump won the US presidential election on Tuesday with at least 290 electoral votes against his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton's 232.
