According to the lawyers, the importance of the upcoming months before Trump's inauguration shouldn't be understated, as the real-estate-king-turned-president-elect must receive daily security briefings, make executive appointments and establish relationships with members of Congress, governors and foreign leaders, among other duties, which will consume all of Trump's time and energy.
"The President-Elect should not be required to stand trial during the next two months while he prepares to assume the Presidency. The time and attention to prepare and testify will take him away from imperative transition work at a critical time." the lawyers wrote, as cited by Politico.
Last week US District Judge Gonzalo Curiel, whom Trump sharply criticized during the campaign as biased because of his Mexican heritage, strongly urged both sides to settle prior to the trial date in order to avoid further complications.
