The Polish Defense Ministry is seeking to sign a contract on the supply of US Patriot surface-to-air missile systems, which are set to be purchased as part of Poland's defense modernization program, before the end of the year, Defense Minister Antoni Macierewicz said on Tuesday.

WARSAW (Sputnik) — In September, Macierewicz announced the decision to place a supply order for eight Patriot systems with the US government.

"This year, we want to sign a contract on air defense program Wisla. The US side agreed that over 50 percent of the [anti-aircraft missile systems] production stipulated by the contract will be done by the Polish military-industrial complex, which is unprecedented," Anthony Macierewicz said, as broadcast by local television channels.

In 2015, the Polish government approved the procurement of US Patriot systems. The supply contract is estimated at $4.3 billion. The first two systems are due to arrive in Poland no later than three years after the contract is signed.

The Wisla (Vistula) program aims at modernizing Poland’s system of aircraft and missile defense by purchasing short- and medium-range anti-aircraft missiles.
