“Concerning the referendum on talks with the European Union, I do not think it is possible in the near future. Under current consequences when the policy of total limitation of rights and freedoms is being conducted by the president and the government, Turkey's joining the European Union seems to be highly unlikely. And everybody understands that,” Yalim said.
Yalim also said that recent remarks of Erdogan may lead to deterioration of EU-Turkish relations that have been built for about 60 years.
On Monday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that the issue of Turkey joining the European Union could be put to a referendum next year following European Parliament President Martin Schulz’s threats to introduce economic sanctions against Turkey amid arrests of opposition politicians and journalists in the country.
