WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The US House of Representatives passed a bill to increase sanctions against the Syrian government and its supporters, Congressman Adam Kinzinger said via Twitter.
"Today, the House acted to increase sanctions on the Assad regime and all those responsible for the atrocities against the people of Syria," Kinzinger tweeted on Tuesday.
The bill, called the Caesar Syria Civilian Protection Act, was passed by a voice vote.
If approved by the Senate and signed by President Barack Obama, the measure would impose new sanctions on anyone doing business with the Syrian government or its military and intelligence agencies.
The legislation would also target government-controlled oil, airline and telecommunications industries and the Syrian Central Bank.
US sanctions have been in place for decades over allegations Syria was a state sponsor of terror, but US officials have imposed new sanctions against the government since the civil war began in 2011.
