South Africa's Democratic Alliance (DA) party leader Mmusi Maimane, announced on Tuesday that he has filed a corruption case against President Jacob Zuma and his associates, the DA said in a press release.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Maimane added that Zuma, along with the politically well-connected Gupta family and other associates, have abused their power to grow a fortune while the vast majority of South African people are living in poverty and unemployment.

"The Democratic Alliance (DA) has today laid criminal charges against President Jacob Zuma, and his band of cronies, for their role in aiding, promoting and benefiting from the corrosive project of State Capture in South Africa," Maimane said, as quoted in the statement.

The leader of the DA party, considered among the biggest rivals of the African National Congress (ANC) lead by Zuma, noted that police is now obligated to launch an investigation into these criminal charges immediately. According to Maimane, the DA will closely watch how the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) deals with the case.

On Novermber 2, Zuma withdrew a court bid to block the publication of an anti-corruption report by ombudswoman Thuli Madonsela's. The report refers to allegedly improper and unethical conduct of Zuma and his associates with respect to an alleged relationship with the Gupta family and its businesses.
