MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Differences between the European Union and Russia might be resolved only through dialogue that must continue, European Parliament President Martin Schulz said on Wednesday.

"Dialogue will continue and must continue. Channels of communication need to remain open whilst respecting the EU sanctions policy. Only through dialogue we will maintain the slim chance to solve our differences," Schulz said at the Boris Nemtsov forum in Berlin.

Schulz added that EU-Russian relations were at their worst since the end of the Cold War because of Russia's alleged involvement in the Ukrainian conflict as well as support for the Syrian President Bashar Assad.

The European Union and the United States accused Moscow of meddling in Ukraine’s internal affairs and imposed several rounds of sanctions on Moscow, as well as decreased the level of cooperation with Russia. The Russian authorities have refuted the allegations, warning that the Western measures are counterproductive.
