MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Over 3,000 of station staffers on London tube voted not to work overtime or on rest days on November 23 after cash-led cuts left safety on a "knife edge," Britain’s largest transport trade union RMT said Wednesday.
"Our dispute is about taking action to haul back the cuts machine and put safety back at the top of the agenda," Rail, Maritime and Transport union’s chief Mick Cash said in the union’s statement.
Industrial action is scheduled to start at midnight next Wednesday. No time for the end of the strike was given, although the RMT said it was available for talks.
The trade union stressed it would not stand by while safety was being compromised by the sacking of almost 900 frontline station workers alongside the closure of tube ticket offices. It warned the current staffing levels would have a "corrosive" impact on staff and passengers alike.
