Seoul intends to build a long-range rocket to ratchet up its capabilities for a possible conflict with Pyongyang.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — South Korea’s military unveiled a plan on Wednesday to build a long-range rocket in the coming years in order to protect the country against the North after Donald Trump’s US presidential victory.

"If deployed and launched, the new unguided projectile MRLS could wreck considerable havoc on exposed targets deep within enemy territory," Kim Si-cheol, a spokesman for the Defense Acquisition Program Administration, told reporters, as quoted by the Yonhap news agency.

The multiple rocket launcher will fire home-made projectiles that could lay waste to an area the size of three football fields, the outlet said, adding the South was ramping up its defenses after Trump’s victory in the US presidential election cast doubt on Washington’s military cooperation deals with Seoul.

Other plans include purchasing F-35 fighter jets from the US arms company Lockheed Martin and invest some $16 million in developing a next-generation 3,000-ton frigate in the next three years.
