Council of EU Supports Visa Liberalization for Ukraine – Press Release
KIEV (Sputnik) — Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko welcomed on Thursday a preliminary decision on visa liberalization for Ukraine, on behalf of the Council of the European Union and urged Brussels to introduce a visa-free regime with Ukraine without any delay.

Earlier in the day, the EU Permanent Representatives Committee agreed on the negotiating position with regard to the visa liberalization for Ukraine.

"I welcome this long-awaited decision by the Council of the European Union at the level of ambassadors on the visa-free regime for Ukraine… I am calling on the EU to fulfill its obligations and complete the process of granting the visa-free regime for Ukraine without any further delay," Poroshenko wrote on his Twitter page.

In late October, Poroshenko said that the European Parliament would sign and ratify documents on establishing a visa-free regime with Ukraine before November 24.

EU Parliament to Sign Visa-Free Regime With Ukraine Until November 24
In December 2015, the EU Commission reached a conclusion that Ukraine had met the benchmark requirements for visa exemption and on April 20 of this year, the Commission published the proposal for visa liberalization.

Once the European parliament agrees and adopts the proposal, EU citizens will be able to travel to the territory of Ukraine visa-free and likewise Ukrainian citizens will be able to travel to the EU countries visa-free for a period of 90 days in any 180-day period. Ireland and the United Kingdom will still be exempted from these measures, according to EU treaties.
