An iconic moment in the life of one of Hollywood's great movie stars, in 1962, Marilyn Monroe shimmied onto a stage in New York's Madison Square Garden. Squeezed into a dress so tight, she had to be sewn into it, Monroe sang then-President John F. Kennedy a very sultry "Happy Birthday" to celebrate him turning 45.

The impromptu serenade caused a sensation. The president was married, and the dress the young starlet wore was flesh-colored, supposedly to give the illusion of being naked.

More than fifty years later, the Jean Louis creation has hit the headlines once more, becoming the most expensive dress ever to be sold at auction.

Adorned with 2,500 hand-stitched crystals, it sold for a staggering US$4.8 million.

The winning bidder was Ripley's Believe It or Not! — an entertainment company which specializes in collecting historically significant items.

"In the 20th century, I cannot think of one single item that tells the story of the 1960s as well as this dress," said Ripley's vice-president, Edward Meyer.

However, interest in clothes worn by the rich and famous has ensured that bidding for a piece of their stardust, has long attracted starry-eyed bidders. From her great rival Elizabeth Taylor, to the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, read on to discover who else has had their outfits sell for big bucks!
