The impromptu serenade caused a sensation. The president was married, and the dress the young starlet wore was flesh-colored, supposedly to give the illusion of being naked.
More than fifty years later, the Jean Louis creation has hit the headlines once more, becoming the most expensive dress ever to be sold at auction.
Adorned with 2,500 hand-stitched crystals, it sold for a staggering US$4.8 million.
The winning bidder was Ripley's Believe It or Not! — an entertainment company which specializes in collecting historically significant items.
"In the 20th century, I cannot think of one single item that tells the story of the 1960s as well as this dress," said Ripley's vice-president, Edward Meyer.
