The phones, according to a Kryptowire press release, “were available through major US-based online retailers (Amazon, BestBuy, for example) and included popular smartphones such as the BLU R1 HD”.
It still remains unclear whether the party responsible for this spyware ‘infection’ sought to conduct some sort of espionage operation or merely to collect data for marketing purposes.
Meanwhile, Adups replied that entire situation was merely a mistake made by a private company as the software was in fact designed for a certain Chinese phone manufacturer who wanted to study user behavior, and that the type of software discovered by Kryptowire was not meant to be used in American phones.
Kryptowire has already relayed its findings to all of the parties involved, as well as to the US government.
