WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — On Friday, Trump nominated US Congressman Mike Pompeo to serve as the next CIA director. The Kansas congressman's nomination still needs to be confirmed by the US Senate.
“Under Brennan the CIA has been politicized and lost its way,” Johnson said on Friday. “Pompeo’s challenge is to try to fix that damage and return the Agency to a genuinely honest broker.”
Outside of the problems Pompeo will be forced to tackle in his new role, Johnson said he lacked enough information on the Kansas lawmaker to intelligently comment on the implications of Trump’s selection for the CIA.
In 2008, Brennan withdrew his name from consideration for CIA Director after journalists raised issues about his possible support for enhanced interrogation techniques during the George W. Bush administration.
After taking over the CIA in 2013, however, Brennan won praise of right groups for supporting efforts to close the notorious US detention center at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
