Mexico to Persist With TPP Talks Regardless of Washington’s Decision
MEXICO CITY (Sputnik) – The Friday strikes are being held in the capital Lima ahead of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit that will take place in the city over the weekend; multiple groups, including students, are taking part, teleSUR TV said.

Left socialist leader Martin Guerra told the TV channel that the TPP "destroys the country's economy, diminishes labor rights, privatizes territories and hinders access to basic medicine."

US President Barack Obama is likely to discuss the TPP issue with his partners in Lima. The trade deal is at risk after Donald Trump's surprising victory in the US presidential elections. Trump vowed to scrap the TPP several times during his campaign calling it a "terrible deal."

Earlier this month, Barack Obama's administration suspended efforts to win congressional approval for TPP before Trump takes office, saying that the pact's fate was up to Trump and Republican lawmakers.

The TPP seeks to remove barriers to trade among its 12 signatories, which together account for 40 percent of the world's economy: the United States, Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore and Vietnam.
