NEW DELHI (Sputnik) — Three soldiers were killed and four were wounded in an attack on a military convoy in the Indian state of Assam carried out by local militants, the country's Defense Ministry said on Saturday.
"They (the terrorists) had planted an improvised explosive device (IED) on the road. When the IED exploded, the convoy stopped. Then the terrorists fired indiscriminately", Lt. Col. Suneet Newton said as quoted by India Today broadcaster.
The incident took place on Saturday at 5:30 a.m. (00:00 GMT) in the Tinsukia district of Assam.
According to the preliminary data, the attack was carried out by the United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA).
A wide range of separatist groups operates in Assam, with ULFA being the most notorious among them. The group seeks to establish the sovereign Assam state and fights against India's authorities, perpetrating terrorist attacks and assassinations of officials.
