MOSCOW (Sputnik) — At least 60 people died after a high-speed train derailed early Sunday near the northern Indian city of Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh, local media reported.

The death toll has climbed from 30 to 60 within an hour after more bodies were pulled from the 14 overturned railcars, according to the Indian Express Online.

Some 150 have reportedly been hurt and more people are feared trapped under the wreckage. It was not immediately clear what caused the train to veer off the track.

The Ministry of Railways vowed to take "strictest possible action" against those who could be responsible for the fatal accident.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was "anguished beyond words" on learning about the loss of lives after to the derailing of the Patna-Indore express.
